42430 To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rml/LG24.5.27. 40/50 HP. SPRING SELF-CENTERING DEVICE. 78430 We have been trying out this device as arranged. The actual measured loads at the pendulum lever ball end are 3 to 4 lbs. to move the pendulum lever from the central position. When the steering wheel has been turned through one turn, the self-centering exerts a force of 15 lbs. at the pendulum lever ball pin. We find that with our present quantity of friction in the steering and also the felt gland on the pendulum lever shaft which creates additional friction, we shall require rather more self-centering in the central position. Will you therefore please let us have some springs for trial with this scheme which will give us 15 to 20 lbs. load at the ball end to move the pendulum lever from its central position, and about 25 to 30 lbs. at full lock, i.e., low rating spring with plenty of set up.
