To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from EFC. c. PJ. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} ORIGINAL EFC/T15.12.28. X765573 X4562 SS.{S. Smith} SEQUENCE STARTER. We have in preparation a report dealing with the various points mentioned in your R3/M11.12.28, the subject matter of which report is mainly the results of our experience of the actual testing of this starter in its various recent forms. We are also making a thorough comparison with the Bosch system, the results of which will be included in the report. We are doing all we can to get this as right as possible, but we are definitely of the opinion that some radical modification to the design will be necessary to deal with the outward blow on disengagement. This is actually dealt with on the Bosch motor by the use of a very viscous oil occupying the space in which the main spring works. When this is removed, the Bosch armature also thumps back on its stop (a fibre or bakelite washer)./ The Bosch spring is twice as long, and of much lower rating but with a slightly greater set. We are/putting in hand a modification to our own starter incorporating the use of a longer spring, occupying in addition the space at present occupied by a rather long distance piece; but there is a good deal of doubt as to whether this is the right thing to do unless we have some kind of fluid friction damper, as in the Bosch, both from the point of view of thumping into engagement and of thumping out.
