Dear Sirs,

The writer would like to apologise for the delay in replying fully to your letter of April 6th, due to his absence from the Works for several prolonged spells.

Your scheme N.Sch.4025 is much more attractive than the original arrangement. To make it really satisfactory we would, however, recommend that an internal stop be fitted to limit the compression of the bellows.

When a bellows is working between stops its characteristics do not vary, but if the solid length of the bellows is used to form the stop there is always a danger that a slight over-compression will bend the convolutions and upset the movement.

It is naturally most desirable to prevent this from occurring in view of the special precautions which you suggest taking to give the correct free length.

There is also the manufacturing difficulty of producing bellows whose solid lengths shall be absolutely uniform from batch to batch.

We do not think that there will be any difficulty in sweating the adjustable screwed centre when No.4 bellows is used, as we can use high temperature solder
