Dear Olley,

We have run into trouble with the synchromesh on the Bentley and wonder whether your Gearbox people can give us any information which would help us out of the difficulty.

The circumstances appear to be that when we let the clutch in on the Bentley the transmission tends to react with a certain frequency unless the clutch is perfectly smooth. The periodic impulses of the transmission are transmitted to the clutch shaft, and the synchromesh sleeve surrounding the cam is flung to and fro, thereby creating a rattle. The rattle is quite pronounced even where the clutch would not be otherwise commented upon adversely.

It is remarkable that the trouble can occur at all because the synchromesh sleeve has quite a considerable amount of friction preventing it rotating due to the plungers.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED.
