E.2/HP.25.10.35.

Aero Battery Ignition Automatic Relay Switch to RR.864.

Referring to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wst.S/MA.14.10.35, it is a pity that it was found not possible to obtain the correct material for the core.

The residual magnetism in the switch tested probably affects the operation quite a lot.

With regard to the hinge design, I agree that we shall have to use either a knife edge or spring blade, but the sample switch has a considerable amount of play in the armature control showing excessive clearance in the hinge. This play should not be present whatever type or location is used, and is not experienced on the standard cutout fitted with the same type of hinge.

We notice you now wish to change the winding particulars from those you originally supplied. This appears to give an increase of about 20% on the field strength.

We agree that it will be better to fit a return spring to the armature, but there is no armature which is strictly in balance and unaffected by the position of the switch.

We also agree that it would be better to provide an adjustment for the air gap and return spring retention.

With regard to the mounting of the contact points on the armature, we are considering this matter and will discuss it further with you when we see how it affects the design.

The remaining small points will be dealt with at the same time, but in the meantime we should like to have the core of the magnet changed to the correct material, to determine how much affect this will have in improving the accuracy of operation of the switch.
