To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} From Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Copy to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FOR DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} re. Synchromesh. I have received a telegram from R.{Sir Henry Royce} which reads asfollows : SINCE REVERSE GIVES OPPORTUNITY FOR CRITICISM ALTER ALL SIZES TO DOUBLE TRAVEL ON PINION BUT NOT OF LEVER PEREGRINE AND BENSPORT BOXES EXACTLY THE SAME GEARS DIFFERENT BACK AXLE RATIOS SUGGEST SIMPLE FORWARD SERVO FOR THESE DOUBT IF SYNCHROMESH EFFECTIVE ON SECOND ALSO IMPOSSIBLE WITH PRESENT SERVO DRIVE STOP TRANSMISSION VIBRATEUR (? VIBRATION) SUSPECT CRANKSHAFT DAMPERS INEFFECTIVE IF ENGINE FREE IN BEARINGS LOVESEY GRILLS SHOULD MEASURE ANGLE OF TORTIONAL SWING AT HALF PERIOD CONSIDER GRY{Shadwell Grylls} OR TYPICAL NECESSARY GENERAL SITUATION REGRET DEPARTED FROM MY IMPRESSION SINCE CONFIRMED SEE LETTER POSTED TODAY SWEEP AWAY RATHER THAN ADD MORE GADGETS: The first part evidently deals with our strong criticism of the inability to change from second to first without making a terrible noise. Please let me know whether this removes the criticism. The second point evidently means that "Peregrine" and Bensport gearboxes should be exactly the same instead of "Peregrine" being based on J.III. This is what I understood at Derby last week was your recommendation. I gather that R.{Sir Henry Royce} is saying that both these cars should have a simple forward servo whereas I believe the original intention was to do without this. I should be glad to hear from you on this point as well. Regarding synchromesh being ineffective on second also impossible with present servo I do not understand why it should be ineffective as we know that other people such as Cadillac are using it. The point about it being impossible with the present servo could not of course apply to Bensport and "Peregrine" but presumably would apply to J.III. | ||
