Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} copy to W.Ov. +7770- HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/LG3. 7. 29. EXPERIMENTAL WORK AND DEVELOPMENT WORK IN CONNECTION WITH CHASSIS. X7770. The line of development which we suggest for the SS.{S. Smith} is as follows :- (1) We require an engine which is smoother at high and low speeds. This eventually may resolve itself into a different type of engine, but we may still improve the present engine with modifications to the engine mounting etc. (2) Engine noise. The reduction in engine noise has not kept in line with the reduction in noise from the rest of the car. Axles, gearboxes, tyres are certainly more silent than they used to be, but on the engines, partly due to the fact of lower gears, we get more noise and fuss. (3) Riding comfort. This is a point which needs constant attention with a view to makeing further improvements. We still feel that the Lancia type of front springing has certain advantages although this may be open to question when fitted to a big car. (4) Steering lock. Although we have made our cars lighter, and they are considerably lighter to handle, the overall length is long and they are difficult cars to turn in a confined space. An increase in lock is desirable. This might be brought about in connection with Item 3. contd :- | ||
