Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence 5th March 1912. C.J. and Technical Committee. Re Axles. The weight should be reduced; we should not be satisfied until we get at least 112 lbs. off. If no improvement by fitting liners or extra bearings same should be left out. These should be tried definitely with our present coarse pitch axle. Efforts should be made to increase strength of pinion shaft. The axle tubes where they join the box could be made thinner, whereas torque tube where it joins the box could be made thicker. Flanges could be lightened, that is, the flanges of the tubes and axle boxes on to which they fit. Tests should be made by loading same and finding out how thin same could be made. Another axle should be set out with smaller bevel wheel as such reduction would very materially decrease weight all round. F.H.R. X140 | ||
