On Fig 5, in addition to its other suggestions, the joint is turned round the other way so that the containing sleeve is solid with the gear box shaft, and the driving blocks are separately inserted from the rear. We have also shewn on this Fig a suggestion for an oil retaining device, which we thought might be cheaper than that on Fig 4, but we are inclined to prefer Fig 4 ourselves. On Fig 6 we shew a suggestion for a leather stocking which might also be adapted to the rear end of the shaft, if desired, but we are doubtful whether the leather will stand the pumping, especially at the sewn joint. In other respects the joint seems simple. In Figs. 4 & 5 it appears to be desirable to castellate the collar carrying the driving pin on to the brazed end of the shaft in order that we may remove the oil retaining devices from both ends of the shaft, and at the same time get a good support for the driving pin. The modifications to the rear axle casing shewn in Figs 1 and 2 we are dealing with on a separate back axle drawing, which we are sending to you in the course of a day or so. We may think of some different way of dealing with it. With further reference to Figs. 4 & 5, it seems to us that the driving pillars, when the joint is driving at the extreme position, may flex on the plates which carry them, and in order to reduce them we suggest in Fig 7 a plate with two Contd. | ||
