PHANTOM 11 - CRANKSHAFTS. --------------------------- It is desirable to bring in at an early date a crankshaft which is partly balanced. In order to do this it means that we must :- a/- Have a stiffened crankshaft on pins and journals, the stiffening up being limited by what can be obtained from the existing forgings. b/- To approximately half balance this crankshaft as a unit. The foregoing gives the best compromise we know of. It will certainly relieve the bearings, and will therefore give improved performance. BY's Department are making a drawing of a crankshaft which can be made from the present forgings to fit in with the above requirements. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} has promised to send sketch. This proposal affects connecting rods and crankcases, as well as crankshafts, as it is not reasonable to add a balance weight to the present type P.11 crankshaft, as these weights would bring down the natural period of the crankshaft into running speeds.
