1020a (Experimental Dept.) Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/CTS{C. Trot Salt - Carburation}2/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 3rd November, 1938. Wellworthy Piston Rings Ltd., LYMINGTON, Hants: For the attention of Mr. Blackith. Your Ref: FB/EHF. Dear Sirs, With reference to your letter dated October 28th concerning the enquiry from Messrs. Lister & Co. of Dursley, we assume from their letter that they are referring to big ends only. One cannot tell, of course, whether or not their trouble with white metal is connected with their method of lubrication. This is a case, you will agree, where a personal visit by the suggested individual, mentioned in my last letter, would serve its purpose. You will recall that it is our practice to have two oil holes in the crankpin equally and oppositely opposed. We note that the Lister bearing receives its oil through two holes adjacent to the sides of the con. rod. Also shown on their drawing is a single hole on the lower side of the bearing; this may probably locate on a dowel, in which case provision might be made on the cap for a scoop to pass oil through a hole in the dowel. This is assuming that no such provision has already been made. If these conditions could be met, and bearing in mind that max. revs are 1500, we see no reason why A.C.9 should not work quite well; assembled, of course, with the usual clearances with which you are already familiar. Yours faithfully, For ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
