87080 To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} E.3/HP.12.11.32. c. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} PN.{Mr Northey} RECEIVED re Starting with Phantom II Semi-expanding carburetter. We have always recognized that starting would be more difficult with the semi-expanding carburetter, partly because it lacks the automatic effect that we get with our standard starting carburetters, in which, owing to the use of a spring loaded valve, the mixture is taken care of, and strengthens up if the engine tends to slow down. Such a valve could be very easily incorporated in the semi-expanding carburetter, as mentioned previously, and we propose to try it experimentally as a temporary addition. It can be added in a very simple manner to the Feregrine carburetter by screwing it into one of the plug holes of the slow running air passage. The remaining part of the difference as regards starting is that we do not think the throttle edge jet with the air supply not entirely concentrated at the fuel nozzle such a good spraying device as the small choke and jet in our standard starting carburetter, but how much this contributes to the difficulty we do not know until we try the proposed modification mentioned above.
