Programme of Steering Experiments.

Ph.III.

The most urgent job on the Ph.III is to confirm the improvement due to the stiffer rockershaft. Three rockershafts to the design Dept. scheme have been instructed for use as follows -

(1) 32-EX.

(2) 30-EX.

(3) This is a spare shaft at present, but will probably be required for 36 or 37-EX.

The rockershaft with plain bearings throughout and still greater stiffness is instructed but no chassis is allocated for this at present. The brown car, 34-EX, would be suitable when this returns to the Works.

The red car, 33-EX, at present has experimental side steering tube springs of high rating and no set up load. These havenot yet been tried on the test road. Springs of still higher rating are ready for trial.

It would be advisable to make rockershaft and side steering tube spring comparisons on a gear without set up load. We therefore suggest that the gear for 30-EX should have no set up load.

25 HP.

The articulated side steering tube is ready to be fitted to a chassis.

The stiffer rockershaft is instructed for the next 10,000 mile test car. We have also to try the effect of various arrangements of side steering tube springs when a chassis is available.
