Marles Steering - Phantom 3.

We have shown on N.Sch.4711, already issued, certain modifications, the principal of which is the stiffer rocker shaft. There is also provision for maintaining preloading on the cam bearings by means of a Belleville washer when the steering box case expands with rising temperature.

In view, however, of a certain amount of doubt as to the value of this form of preloading we should like to have the stiffer rocker shaft tested with and without preloading as we are anxious to avoidaltering the bottom end cover of the steering box from that shown on N.Sch.4291.

It will, of course, be understood that the initial preloading is obtained with a suitable selection of the fixed packing washer, and that the Belleville washer is only intended to make up for the differential expansion effect of using a bronze case.

It was understood that RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} was to obtain some of these cases in malleable iron, and we should be interested to know how far this has got.
