1015 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}10/MH.{M. Huckerby} 21st. August, 1939. Messrs. Vandervell Products Ltd., Western Avenue, Park Royal, LONDON, W.3. For the attention of Mr. G.A.Vandervell. Dear Sirs, We send you herewith a sketch of a spherical thrust washer for use behind the pinions in a rear axle differential. We believe you make such washers in various materials. There are one or two points we should like to know about such washers, and wonder whether you would send us the information. We have found that the best material for differential washers to withstand the corrosion of sulphur oils at high temperatures is aluminium bronze. Therefore could you make such washers in this material ? If not, what materials are practicable and what is known of their corrosion resistance ? Next, what tolerance would there be on the thickness of the washers ? If you could let us have this information we could decide whether this kind of washer will do what we want and subsequently order some for test. Yours faithfully, for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
