contd:- -2- noises mean I think a longer silencer with more baffles. Cutout means a through pipe and butterfly valve or valves (as Goshawk here) which is extremely good and pleasing - i.e. more power than with no pipes. (9) Clutch improvement consists of lighter driven part instructed in steel and ferodo, the clutch to stop by gravity brake to be arranged at WW..but temporarily applied if possible at Derby. (10) Brake operation improvements by moderately slow running servo and R.R.M. scheme (or ratchet between servo clutch and lever). Mr. Day's criticism is treated elsewhere. There is no lost time. Servos should be supplied to test running 10 to 1, and 20 to 1, but our advantage is 60° angles of servo means light load, but naturally will be slow unless driven at proper proportionate speeds. We have gradually reduced our attempts at producing about the minimum worthy to be called an improvement, and yet we seem far from getting the work finished. Now we must buck up for the last lap, and get something on the road worthy of our reputation. Don't cut new ground or wander off into side tracks, but go straight ahead with the narrow programme in hand, and don't admit and imagine we are going to be long about it. Whoever delays it takes great responsibility and runs great risk. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
