Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Mths.{Reg Matthews}2/MH.{M. Huckerby} 22nd March 1938. Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd., Experimental Dept., DERBY. For the attention of Mr.Matthews. Dear Sirs, We much appreciate your communication of the 19th and are very interested to learn that you are able to confirm beneficial results from the operation of tin-coating. We shall, of course, be pleased to treat further Merlin pistons to which you refer as soon as they come to hand. We would mention that we have now just passed the hundred-thousandth piston through this process, and we have had ample evidence over this bulk during this winter of the value of the process. We hope you will decide to standardise it on your car pistons, as we feel sure it is of value in the early life of the engine. You need have no apprehension about small quantities being a nuisance to us, because the process is such that assorted sizes can be dealt with simultaneously, except when we come to pistons of such a size as the Merlin, where rather special handling is required. We would remind you of our offer to demonstrate the process to you or any of your representatives should they care to arrange to pay us a visit at any time for this purpose. I am sorry time has not permitted me to | ||
