Report on 38 H.P. Lanchester Car. 6 cylinder. -- 2 -- dirt etc. 5. Engagement of clutches on all gears not good. Inclined to grab or chatter. 6. Side brakes not sufficiently powerful, mechanism too springy. 7. Uncomfortable for front passengers. Floorboards much too hot. The epicyclic gearing is cleverly arranged and seems to work well; very complex if anything wrong and if neglected from oil both it and the worm axle would seriously suffer, stopping the car probably for dismantling. The general arrangement would make a good town carriage, but a poor touring car for owner driving. I am rather of the opinion that the worm axle is not much better than a good bevel and has its own disadvantages which are serious; i.e. loss of efficiency and it would suffer badly from defective lubrication, in both of which cases the bevel would be preferable. Further report later. | ||
