Dear Sirs,

Thank you for your letter about the Vermillion colouring we have been getting in our gearboxes.

The reason why I have not rung you up to see some gears while they are still the bright red colour is that the gearbox we have just been running showed no signs of colouring until dismantled. The colouring in this instance was a thin layer on the shafts, and could not be seen until all the gears had been removed. This rather bears out my suggestion that the deposit only occurs on gears which have previously been discoloured by running in Hi-press.

We hope to hear from you shortly about the ball bearing which had failed through lack of lubrication which you saw when you were here.
