V4257 c. Mr. [REDACTED] [REDACTED] EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}6/H30.1.24. re. 20-HP. Balance of Rear Brake Drums & Hubs. Although every care is now being given to the correct balance of wheels and tyres on the 20-HP car, which, as a matter of fact are coming out very good at present, we find that the rear drums themselves vary in this respect more than the wheels. On enquiry from the Works they do not appear to have any specification or instructions with regard to the balance of these drums, which we submit is an important point. We have taken various tests of these drums on cars on test and find that the difference of balance varies between 1 - 3 1/2 oz. on to the periphery of the drum. We suggest that instructions should be given that these should be balanced within an oz. in this position, which is practically what we are getting at present with wheels and tyres. We shall be glad to receive a copy of your instructions to the Works on this matter, also you may possibly think it wise that we should check cars on test, and those which exceed the amount you specify could be returned to the Works for attention.
