With reference to Mr. Royce's memo. R8/G21.4.20, in which he makes certain recommendations, I should be glad if you will let me know what instructions have been issued regarding these, as follows:- 1. On what number of chassis coming on test will the split bottom leaf be removed. 2. In view of the fact that he considers that these springs may break on cars for the Continent, is any action to be taken for the split leaves to be changed to a plain leaf spring on chassis which are to be delivered for Continental use from the works or from coachbuilders? 3. On what number chassis coming on test are we to commence the pre-war type springs? 4. What action is being taken in regard to "rendering the bedding between the leaves more satisfactory than it is at present" with regard to cars coming on test, cars on test and cars delivered? With regard to the last paragraph, I feel that we are now delivering cars on which we are likely to have complaints of squeaking, especially in view of the coming weather conditions, although action is now being taken for the cars to be turned out with the leaves well greased. It certainly is a fact that the present rear springs do not remain quiet very long but soon commence to squeak. EP.{G.
