Coverley - Production Engineer} E/L1d.1/HP.14.12.36. Phantom III Chassis. We attach herewith a list of the design work completed on the Phantom III chassis during the last month, and also particulars of design work in hand. Clutch. A revised design of clutch is in hand embodying features found desirable as the result of experimental tests and embodying cost reductions. This design is not being finalised pending the results of tests in progress on various suggested features. Exhaust System. Design instructions are completed for the revised lighter and cheaper exhaust system. Valve Gear. We have completed a camshaft design to be used without hydraulic tappets. General Cost Reduction. Various designs have been completed to reduce the cost of various parts, e.g. petrol filter, engine mounting, cylinder liners. Under Bonnet Temperature. We have completed and issued a design of combined bypass thermostat and shutter control unit which provides for a quick warm up of the engine cooling water, and at the same time opens the radiator shutters at a lower temperature than the present system, thus producing a lower under bonnet air temperature.
