X 2894 To EPG. from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Copy to HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} E1/G7/5/21. X2894 RE TUNGSTEN CONTACTS ON LOW TENSION MAKE AND BREAK. X1819 Referring to the use of tungsten on the low tension contact maker, Mr. Royce would like you to try whether this will be more successful on the R.R. ignition if some scrub is definitely introduced into the contacts. As designed, the R.R. blade type of low tension make and break is arranged to avoid scrub, but could be altered for the purpose of this experiment, by either lifting the contact blade half way along its length, so that it bends and drags one contact across the other at the moment of being lifted or being dropped, or by putting the clamping face of the blade out of line with the contact surfaces in such a manner that the moving contact approaches the stationary contact from an angular instead of a normal direction.
