To RRC/GMJ. c. to Mr. Turner. c. to Mr. Crouch. c. to Mr. Parker. c. to Ey. c. to Borg & Beck Co. RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/NRC.{N. R. Chandler}1/JH.1/S.39. re Bentley V Long 10" Clutch. 32 clutches were returned to Borg & Beck on July 24th. with various complaints, as stated in our letter ref. RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/NRO.17/JH. of July 21st. On Aug. 16th. I visited the Borg & Beck works at the request of Mr. Armitage to discuss with them the various points in detail, and we have now agreed to the following arrangements. Release lever adjusting screws slack in thread. B. & B. have agreed to replace those which are slack, the trouble being due to variation in the threads in the release levers supplied by the Long works in America. Release lever setting. Considerable variation in the setting may be produced by the method of bolting the clutch down on the flywheel or setting rig, as a result of distortion of the cover when the nuts are being tightened, and any such distortion is multiplied nearly five times when measured at the release levers. B. & B. use a rig in which the clutch is pressed down from 6 points by pneumatic plungers, so that the pressure is uniform all round, whereas tightening down by nuts is liable to upset the release lever readings as indicated by the clock. I therefore agreed that we should continue to set the release levers just as we have done for years past with the B. & B. clutch, which means that B. & B. will send the clutches to us with the adjusting screws not locked by peening, and we must make sure that all clutches are finally set by us and the adjusting screws locked before despatch for service depots at home or abroad. | ||
