-2- to check over 4.B.50 and 11.B.V. to see if the valve gear is affected by these valves re noise. Our latest water circulation tests can be described briefly as follows: Purpose. To ascertain whether the exhaust valve temperature and "running on" generally, could be materially affected by suitably modifying the water circulation, it having been proved that "running on" is cured by spraying water on the exhaust valves. This has been our past experience on all other series of Rolls Royce and Bentley units. Method. a) The water pump was connected independently of the engine to a variable speed electric motor. b) Various alterations were made to the direction and quantity of water flowing through the block, and round the head. Procedure. Normally, the water enters the block from the pump and travels through the internal gallery. From this it is directed by jets on to the backs of the exhaust valve seats (inside the block). It then goes through the transfer holes to the head, and after winding its way around each combustion chamber in turn, exits from the front end of the head, just above the pump. Results. The following mods. were tried independently, and then combined: 1. Water Pump. Run at varying speeds in conjunction with various constant engine speeds. | ||
