ED{J. L. Edwards} c. EFC. X7741a BY/Cgh{W Clough}9/G.23.5.29. re 20 HP. CHASSIS - GIN-56) GIN-51) MANN EGERTON, NORWICH. -------------------------------- With reference to your EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}/Thn22/H.17.5.29. and EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}/Thn24/H.17.5.29. giving extracts from the final tester's reports, the question of making suitable provision for additional gadgets, such as cigar lighters, to take current through a heavy fuse, has already received consideration, and certain recommendations have been made to R.{Sir Henry Royce}, and until we get his decision on the matter we are unable to do anything further. In regard to the question of fitting Connolly bumpers, we consider that it should be pointed out to the coachbuilders that we are not in agreement with drilling holes in the top flanges of the chassis. Our view is that generally the makers of spring buffers do not provide adequate means for attaching the bumpers to the chassis, and the only reasonable bumper we know of is the one provided by Messrs. Barkers. We do not remember Mann Egerton's application for suitable brackets being submitted to this Department, although of course we had no suitable brackets of our own, but usually when this question is submitted to us we generally refer people to the type of bumpers and the method of attachment which has been adopted by Messrs. Barkers. Mr. Royce is not in agreement with the fitting of spring bumpers on the front of a chassis owing to the fact that it adds weight where we have been striving to keep it down, in addition to the fact that it is hardly likely that the bumpers would coincide with the extreme projecting part at the rear of another chassis.
