Our Ref. Tech.Dept. FOH/AD. Your Ref. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}5/MH.{M. Huckerby} S. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Grylls, Esq., Rolls-Royce Limited, D E R B Y . 4th November, 1938. My dear Grylls, With reference to your letter of the 2nd inst., I presume you have the New Departure list and the bearing which you mention is their No. 43308, which is a standard deep groove Ball Bearing with a groove for a snap ring etc., and our equivalent to this is our MJ.40-G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp}, details of dimensions etc. being shown on Sheet 86 series B. enclosed. As you mention, the New Departure bearing has 8 balls 19/32" dia. whereas our bearing has 9 balls 17/32" dia., and apart from the fact that I personally think that a greater number of balls of a slightly smaller diameter provide a better bearing, I would like to point out that even taking the theoretical capacity of the two bearings our bearing has a capacity within 130-lbs. of the New Departure bearing, at 1,000 r.p.m. With regard to our bearing MJ.40-G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp}, you will find that the dimensions of the groove etc. are the same as the New Departure, but the development of this bearing in this Country has not been sufficient to enable us to arrive at any finality with regard to the snap rings, and we therefore leave these to be supplied by the purchaser of the bearings. With regard to the other New Departure bearing which we discussed during the Show, that is the cup and cone type as used on hubs in America, I am enclosing copy of our list 1.B. series C. outlining the overall dimensions etc., and [Red Stamp]: Enclosure | ||
