To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to CJ. c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to EY. ORIGINAL Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}4/L613. 9.22. GOSHAWK 11. ENGINE GEAR RATTLES. X4229 X4282 We have proved definitely that the cause of the rattles is the uneven turning of the Camshaft. We have driven an engine and proved that the rattles were there. We have then removed the push rods which operate the tappets and the rattles entirely disappeared. We did this a number of time and satisfied ourselves that the Camshaft is the sole cause of the trouble. We have tried fixing a larger oil pump in order to stop the noise. Putting in a 40/50 pump is not large enough. We are now trying an Eagle pump. The most satisfactory means we have found to improve existing cars is to feed oil on the engine gears at three points - (1) between camshaft and intermediate wheel (2) between camshaft and dynamo pinion (3) between camshaft and crankshaft. We are persevering with this because it promises to be a simple and satisfactory way of considerably improving the trouble if not entirely overcoming it. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} | ||
