ORIGINAL TO BG./DG. } FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} SECRET. R1/M26. 5. 24. Copy to - HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} A.{Mr Adams} C. re.ARTILLERY WHEELS. X4580 X9820 Regarding steel artillery wheels - Sankey type - for EAC.2. & 3., and Goshawk, I understand that we can maintain the proper steering position of .5" off centre point steering, and use the standard design of the above wheels, providing that we do not use the Dunlop type hub, but attach the wheels to the hubs in the standard way used for this type of wheel, namely, with loose flange and bolts. If you have not a suitable design for this equipment DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} will provide the necessary drawings. I consider it would be preferable to adopt the Sankey make of wheel as they were the originators of these wheels and probably make them better than anyone else. It is I understand agreed that the clumsy and ugly type of hub which I objected to, which forces out our track and steering into a dangerous position, is avoided. The whole trouble seems to have arisen through the desire to adopt the combination of the wire wheel hub with the Sankey type of wheel. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
