TO [REDACTED] FROM E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} SECRET. E2/M24.5.34. Copy to [REDACTED] HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} A.{Mr Adams} C. 111. re. SERVO MOTOR. X9910 Referring to drawing LeC. 1867. Mr. Day informs us that you have difficulty in producing the thrust washers. These are asked for in case hardened steel as stated on the drawing, and the intention was in the case of the clamping nut that this piece should be only hard in the ball race and not on the thread or castellations. Similarly with regard to the other thrust washer the bore and keys were to be left soft. We should like to know given these conditions whether you still think that some alteration should be made. Regarding the trouble experienced with the outer thrust washer cross binding when the adjustment nut is screwed up we notice that the locking serrations on the sample brought by Mr. Day are not even and are defective in other respects. The serrations on this piece are not likely to advance squarely when the adjustment nut is rotated. Nevertheless we are at the moment sketching an alteration to the nut and washer whereby the latter is lengthened at the expense of the former. We shall shortly send particulars of this.
