Y328 To Hdy.{William Hardy} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}13/KW.16.6.36. Phantom III Gearbox. We have carried out some tests to determine the frictional resistance to fore and aft and lateral movement of the top gear sliding piece under different applied torques. The sliding piece was in the third speed position and loaded through the top gear teeth by a pure torque applied to the first motion shaft. [Diagram annotations: PURE TORQUE APPLIED, .003 INITIAL CLCE] The frictional forces at A for various torques measured from a hysteresis loop were - Torque Friction at A 20 lbs/ft. 15 lbs. (approx.) 70 " 20 " 150 " 40 " The endwise load to push the sliding piece out of mesh against varying torques is for the splines only 550 lbs. per 100 lbs/ft. torque, and including sliding the top gear teeth, 810 lbs. per 100 lbs/ft.
