The steering box is to remain a malleable iron casting, although we are proposing to try the box as an aluminium casting experimentally. The steel cap FE.143, has been lightened as shown in the Expl. Dept. drawing No.Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs}305. The stops in the box should not be filed but merely left rough after fettling as they are not intended to work as stops but merely to prevent the cam roller coming out of mesh during the process of erecting the box. 6) Steering Column Outer Tube. We propose reducing the gauge of the steering column outer tube to .048" thick, SWG.18, and to use a lightened socket somewhat similar to that shown on Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs}239. A subsequent scheme will follow almost immediately for an experiment with a view to deleting the long drillings in the rocker shaft for the lubrication of the rear end of the side steering tube. If this scheme is successful it will enable the rocker shaft to be hollowed out by a large bore so saving weight, whilst a considerable cost reduction will be effected.
