LONDON.S.W.1.

Dear Mr. Paul,

We understand from the Air Ministry that they have now agreed upon the specifications of the two new fuels for use in the Air Services. The one fuel is a higher octane edition of D.T.D.134 without lead, and the other is a leaded fuel which will be available for such engines that have satisfactorily passed the A.M. Type Test on it.

We are told that the former specification has already been issued to you and that the latter will be issued very shortly.

The knock rating for the non-leaded fuel (i.e. the replacement to D.T.D.134) is to be 76 to 78 octane and the leaded fuel to be 84 to 87 octane when determined on the C.F.R. Engine under the following conditions:- 900 R.P.M. with 212°F.{Mr Friese} jacket temperature and 260°F.{Mr Friese} mixture temperature. Under the above conditions of test we understand the D.T.D.134 would be about 73 octane.

We do not know why such a wide limit is given for the octane value of each fuel as we thought you would be able to supply fuels with closer tolerances than this.

It has been agreed that we shall carry out preliminary tests preparatory to a complete Type Test on these two fuels and understand that you are in the position to supply us with both these fuels. We are therefore sending you a separate order for 500 galls of each fuel to the following
