Phantom III Chassis Costs.

Cost investigations have shewn that we are having to pay £15.18.0 per engine for cylinder liners which are bought out, almost completely machined, from Sheepbridge Stokes. These are centrifugally cast and the material is a special one developed by Sheepbridge Stokes to suit this method of production.

If we can successfully use liners cast in our own foundry from our normal cylinder iron we should be able to reduce the cost of this item by a very considerable amount. The works estimate that liners can be produced in this manner at a factory cost of £7.16.0. per engine, i.e. the saving amounts to £8.2.0 per engine. The only trouble one could anticipate due to the change of material is distortion of the liners at the bottom gland. This however may not exist in a greater degree than with Sheepbridge Stokes centrifugally cast liners and can only be determined by experiment.

We think it is well worth while to put in hand several sets which should be fitted to and tested in experimental engine units.

Will BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} please instruct if this proposal is agreed.
