Grease a length of the rope (approx. 10") cut and twist one end to a point. Wind four complete coils round a shaft 9/16" dia., cut off at fourth complete coil, and taper the end. Grease another length of rope (approx. 9") and as before taper one end. Wind three complete coils over the bottom layer, commencing over the start of the lower coils (see sketch attached), cut to length and taper end. Compress tightly in formers, slightly release and with plenty of grease applied rotate formers to smooth ends over. SUMMARY OF RESULTS. Standard 'Lion' packings E.72046. Only one set of this type of gland completed the 4 hrs. run which was set as the maximum time during the eliminating tests. The longest time run by any other set was 45 mins. whether fitted as standard (E.70527 arrgt.) or spring loaded by a 20 lbs. spring. These packings are altogether too hard, and would need very high spring pressure to function effectively. contd :- | ||
