We had a talk with Mr. Raby of the British Aluminium Co. the other day, and discussed with him some of the reasons why the P.III cylinder block costs so much to produce. Basically, the worst trouble appears to be that, whichever way up the crankcase was cast, the angular ring of material on which the liner is supported was liable to trap impurities which should normally be collected in the risers. The boss which runs from the front of the crankcase to the oil cooler, is also a source of trouble, and he asked if this could be raised to the crankcase face. When we come to redesign the P.III engine we recommend that we build up a casting in plasticine to what we think would give the best results, and get Mr. Raby over to have a look at our proposals before we produce one of the new castings.
