Dear Sirs,

Thank you for your letter of the 11th June. We quite agree with you that it would be better to have a more substantial spring for the contact. We can arrange this for the instrument to make contact at 97° and read correctly at this point. It will, however, only show 98 1/2 or 99° when the water is at 100. As, however, the boiling point varies with the barometer, and may be anywhere from 99 to 101, this is not really material.

I am afraid it is quite an oversight on our part that the stop at 50° was not insulated. This is, of course, a most serious defect. We have another of these instruments nearly finished with these two alterations, and we hope to be able to send it to you tomorrow, in exchange for the instrument you now have. With regard to your enquiry for an ether thermometer to read from 70 to 120°C. we are sending you a quotation through our London Sales Office.

Yours faithfully,
FOR
CAMBRIDGE INSTRUMENT CO. LTD.
