RE Chassis 18.S.IV.

On the 13th inst; we took comparative petrol consumption tests over a three mile course, one with the shutters working normally and the other with the shutters set to give a temperature of 80°C approx. The increase in temperature gave an improvement on all speeds. You will see on the Daily Report that the average consumption yesterday was 14.37 mpg which is an improvement on the previous records. In the morning we ran the car at a maximum temperature of 85°C, but ran into trouble with bad pre-ignition and of course a consequent loss of power after sustained high speeds. In the afternoon we reduced the temperature to a maximum of 80°C and the consumption was the same as in the morning but the pre-ignition was better but not by any means cured.
We are continuing the mileage with the temperature at 80°C.

Owing to the weather conditions not being suitable, we have been unable to take further brake tests.
