Aluminium Distance Pieces in Frame - Phantom III

We have already sent to you sheets 1,2 and 3 of LeC 4887 showing the aluminium distance pieces in the chassis frame of Phantom III, for the first fifty production cars. We now send LeC 4887, sheet 4, showing a distance piece at the rearmost foot of the cross for subsequent chassis, which we presume may have the diagonal bracing to the third cross member.

In accordance with our previous suggestion we are proposing that the bolting through the frame for the cross as well as for the bolting for the diagonal stay to the frame and the gear box rear cross member shall be by clearance holes. We have increased the bolting of the diagonal stay to the frame to .312" diameter, as by the use of clearance holes we shall be relying on friction. This proposal calls for a modification to the angle pieces attaching the diagonal stay to the frame. These have been spread over the diagonal stay in order to take hold of a larger area, and are attached by five reamed quarter bolts.
