Phantom III Chassis Frame.
--------------------------

We understand that it has been requested by the Works that a scheme should be produced for the elimination of the turned steel tubular distance piece in the Phantom III chassis frame, at the same time consideration being given to any other modifications that may be necessary to enable all the drilling to be done from the outside of the frame after the plate has been welded on.

On LeC 4887 (Sheet 1) herewith we show the scheme for dealing with the frame side members, both left and right hand, between the rear dumb iron and the front end of the rear spring. All the distance pieces have been replaced by aluminium die castings, the same being used on either side without handing. In all cases except at the ends of the second cross member the distance pieces are handed by merely turning them round.

In the particular case mentioned the distance piece is tapped for the retaining studs from both sides.

The design of the die castings has been discussed with WS/Gallimore with a view to making the dies as cheaply as possible.

The front end of the rear spring has distance pieces which are put into the frame through the hand hole after the frame is welded up and there is no desire to alter this.

A scheme is in hand for a bracket for the front end of the rear spring with rubber shackles which will call for different distance pieces and drilling.

Subsequent schemes dealing with the rest of the frame are in hand and will follow immediately.
