OUR REF: RLK/NK. Dixon Messrs. Rolls-Royce Limited. D E R B Y. 24th September 1937. Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr. Dixon. We are in receipt of your letter of the 18th inst. It seems to us probable that the best solution of the present difficulty is to increase the nominal diameter of the rollers or of the armature which would in some cases result in an interference fit if it were possible for the pump to be assembled. In practice it is not. We have tried assembling the pump with the tightest fit which we can assemble and the pump is perfectly free in its action, and there is no reason why it should not be. In effect this would mean using the pump as a gauge, the operator assembling the pump putting the rollers in position but eliminating any which would not go in. As a rule there would still as an average be slack in the roller assembly, but in an individual case in which there happened to be no slack, we are inclined to think that the pump would work equally well. It would not of course be possible for the rollers to rotate, but on the other hand if they were a fairly close fit, they would not scrub, but would take up a correct position on their races and rock about that point. We do not think it is possible to produce a pre-loading in the course of assembly which would be as great as the magnetic pull which they normally have to support. Would you like us therefore, to submit to you a pump assembled with the rollers as tight as we can get into -1- | ||
