Dear Edwards,
I was sorry to get your letter stating that owing to a rush of work you were unable to come North today. In order to be here to meet you I had refrained from joining my people who were on holiday so I am naturally rather disappointed.
You hinted that your firm was a little dubious about the cost of the proposed research into reducing the power losses due to silencing.
If you were to employ me to assist in this matter the expense would consist of two parts - the experimental work carried out in your place and my fee as consultant. With regard to a consulting fee I am unable to make any suggestion. The value of my work to the firm would depend on the results obtained, and as these cannot be predicted it is impossible to assess the value. I would be quite willing to do the work first and leave the question of remuneration entirely to the firm.
