COPY. 1110 From BORG & BECK COMPANY LTD., Tachbrook Road, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 3/RH{R. Hollingworth} SALES.2/AMS/LP.{Mr Lappin} Confidential. 15th February, 1941. Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd., DERBY. For the attention of Mr. W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham. Dear Sirs, Re Tank Clutches. We would refer to your letter of the 5th instant with regard to Tank Clutches, and have pleasure in enclosing herewith proposed installation print of a redesigned 16" twin-plate asswmbly, Drg. No. SK. 31312. You will appreciate from this drawing that cover formation is altered, also method of transmitting drive to intermediate pressure plate is changed. Not only do we consider this arrangement a decided improvement but an added advantage in the reduction of outside diameter from 19" to 18 1/2" is obtained. As suggested by Mr. Bastow during his recent visit, we have re-located position of dumbell splines to facilitate dismantling. Referring again to the recommended 18" twin-plate assembly, and in particular your remarks relative to inertia of spinning members, will the space allow the inclusion of a brake, for we are of the opinion that a brake would answer your requirements. A suggested design is shown enclosed installation drawing No. SK. 31307A. Your comments on this proposal would be appreciated in due course. Certain features depicted in dotted lines we would ask you to ignore as they apply to another special W.D. vehicle. Your attention we would also draw to the proposed redesign of cover whereby a reduction in O/D to a dimension of 20 1/2" is obtained; reference to this reduction was made in the Writer's previous letter of the 30th ultimo.
