We have looked into this job sometime ago and found the nominal clearance between the Acme thread, and bore of cover to be .012 with a maximum of .016. A gauge has been made for checking this. Notes have now been added to the drawings calling for the eccentricity of both pieces to be within .0015 run-out. The felt oil seals were found to be of inferior quality and these have been scrapped, and new and better quality felts fitted. We have not had any cases of failure of the bearing during tests, or of oil leakage or seizure since the above modifications were incorporated nearly 3 months ago. When fitting new bearings at Depots it is essential that the nip washer is correctly adjusted to give the .002 nip required as failure of the bearing may be occasioned by incorrect adjustment. We gather that in most cases of seizure the point of picking up is always in a certain position relative to the resultant thrust from the pinion due to the flexing of this piece. This should receive further attention by the Design Office. RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/Cy. Cy | ||
