BENTLEY REAR AXLE.

Confirming our conversation with you we think that many noisy axles are due to faulty manufacture in the pinion assembly.

The evidence we have is that if a thrust bearing is correctly nipped in the first place it does not become loose.

We have, however, issued a Standardisation Sheet for a hardened adjustment washer which we think will eliminate any possibility of the washer hammering loose. Ransome and Marles know of similar trouble that has been overcome in this manner.

We understand from you that you will only use one size of washer and that the correct adjustment will be obtained by shaving the cover GB.2018. We think the finish of this cover and accuracy of the mating faces are very important.

We recommend for the next two months that at the latest stage in the testing convenient to Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} the pinion assembly should be withdrawn and the nip re-measured. If there is any settling down due to burrs etc. this will be corrected and trouble may be prevented. Two months should show whether this additional inspection is necessary.

As regards instructions to Depots when fitting the hardened washer we understand you will supply tackle and send a man to K.{Mr Kilner} to show how best this job can be done accurately. It will be done on all 4 1/4 litre cars when a prop. shaft damper is fitted and also in all cases of axle complaints.
