- 2 - HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}1/VS.{J. Vickers}21.11.38. Frames and Fittings - continued. The following bolts in which the threads were formed by rolling appear to be quite satisfactory. K.204/5 Starting Handle Bracket. K.304 Centre Step Iron. K.304 Change Speed Bracket in Frame. K.304 Battery Box Rail. K.304 Support Bracket, Propeller Shaft. K.304 Petrol Pump Bracket in Frame. K.205 Side Brake Lever Bracket in Frame. K.205 Armstrong Damper. K.241 Support Bracket, Intermediate Shaft. K.241 "Floatex" Mountings. The above were produced by the Acton Bolt Company. Softer front bump buffers were substituted for the originals after 11,587 miles running. Both front and rear buffers are in good condition. The near side rubber gearbox mounting has distorted - see attached photograph. The front and rear bumper bars are satisfactory. Rear Axle - 9:37 Ratio. In general condition this section is satisfactory; the following points should, however, be noted. The backlash in the axle gears has increased by .020, presumably owing to loss of preload on the pinion bearings. When reassembled the backlash was .015 as compared with .028 on dismantling, the decrease in backlash being caused by correcting the preload. Oil leakage was noted through the faces of the roller bearing housings GB.3983/4. Heldite jointing compound was not used initially, but has been utilised on reassembly. Oil also leaks through the seal fitted to the near side of the centre casing and axle shaft. Both Angus oil seals have failed and have been replaced. The inner races of Timken roller bearings have been revolving on either side of the differential casing, and the outer race has rotated in the housing on the off side. This has been pointed out to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} who has agreed to reassemble the axle in this condition. continued.
