Experimental Dept. 1d 10 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/NRC.{N. R. Chandler}4/JH. 4th June, 1937. Messrs. Ferodo Ltd., Chapel-en-le-Frith. For the attention of Mr.Longley. Dear Sirs, We would like to thank you for the courtesy you extended to the writer. We are arranging to try out the 10" and 11" S.6777 facings you handed to us. With regard 13.5 facings for the Phantom III, it will clearly be necessary to raise the spinning speed by a considerable amount. We realise that the plates tested were among the first made in the new dies, and consequently the finish on the outside diameter was not all that could be desired. We suggest that an improvement in strength might be effected by pressing the remainder of the rivet holes i.e. the small diameter as well as the head size, and by pressing the 3/8" clearance holes so as to avoid drilling, if possible. We enclose a print of arrangement outline drawing Ex.27309 and would explain that the dies for the spring plates Ex.23804 where made the wrong "hand" and we will forward you a revised drawing of the lining Ex.23803A when the tracing has been altered, and we trust that the alteration in green pencil on the print herewith will make this clear. Summing up, it will be necessary to improve the 13.5" S-6777 facing in respect of spinning speed. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
