X 3701 To R.R. of America Inc. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} for the attention of OY). c. to CJ. c. to BJ. c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} R1/G23.12.20 X.3701 RE CORROSION OF FILTER GAUGE - (25 LW - Mr. LIVERMORE). X.3457 With reference to 25 LW - (Livermore) I am sorry to hear that the gauze has failed in the filter of this car. You will notice that the gauze returned is that of the "going-in" filter. There should also be the protection of the exit filter. My impression is that the petrol must be very impure, containing something which corrodes copper or brass. We find in England this takes place due to the sulphur in the benzole, but as you appear to have no benzole in U.S.A. we can only conclude that there is something similar in some of your petrols. We may add that the smell from the gauze returned to us is so pungent as to be quite different from anything we are used to in England, in either benzole or petrol. I am quite of the opinion that Monel metal gauze would promise better results, but whether it would be an absolute cure to I know not. Apparently it might require silver, gold, or platinum to withstand the chemical action entirely in the case of some fuels, or additions to, or impurities in them. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
