INSIDE AIR INTAKES. "F" ENGINE.
FAIREY "FOX" BATTLESHIP.

A series of tests were carried out on the above type of machine to find out the effect of inside air intakes on the general performance of the "F" engine during flight. The pilot who flew the machine reports that the engine fitted with these intakes is considerably improved regarding the smooth running. There is a slight improvement on the ground running and R.P.M. but in flight there was little or no difference regarding the speed of the machine. The running was greatly improved, especially when carrying out certain evolutions which previously seriously effected the carburation. The following is the flight test report.

Ground running. Air Temp. + 16° C. R.P.M. 1780/1800.
Old intakes. R.P.M. 1760/1770.
Take off. Machine starting and until it becomes air borne 1900 RPM machine when it becomes air borne 2000 R.P.M.
Full throttle level at 2000 ft. 141 MPH/ASI.2300 R.P.M. Air +13C.
" " " " 10,000 ft. 129 MPH/ASI.2250 R.P.M. Air + 4C.
Engine very smooth at full throttle (and on the climb at 2000 R.P.M.) Rough engine period at 1300 R.P.M. (Throttled)
Engine O.K on steep turns to the left or right. Full throttle.
" " " Yawing. Full throttle.
" " " side slipping to left or right. Full throttle.
