BODIES FOR S.S.

In reply to EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}4/29.4.29.

We agree that the difficulties in connection with mounting subframes on our SS.{S. Smith} are not unsurmountable. We have had sufficient experience to shew us where the difficulties are and how they can be overcome, so that we must make very sure that we clear up all the doubtful points before we issue our coachbuilders instructions. We believe your book on the subject will deal adequately with the situation; you know all the difficulties we have experienced and will be in a position to deal with them.

Your five points cover all our liabilities :

(1) and (2) are easy, subframes must be interchangeable - the rear bracket should definitely be fixed in height relative to the top of the upsweep - adjustable packings are also provided front and rear for vertical movement - lateral adjustment is also adequately provided for on the central fixing, the position of the hole in the frame for the central fixing becomes rather a difficulty if we expect variation in the upsweep, this should be overcome by drilling to a template after the front and rear brackets are fixed on.

Point (3) should be looked after by adequate crating. (4) appears to be the point most out of control but with adequate instructions in 'Body Subframes' and with extra cross members it should be overcome. (5) is not difficult after the initial secrecy is over.

The whole job will be easily possible provided we take every precaution to eliminate the difficulties we have experineced with the first bodies we have mounted.
